Habitat Restoration for Endangered Cottontails in Maine
A pilot project of the Wildlife Volunteer Corps, Defenders' volunteers have teamed up with Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge for the past two years to help restore habitat for endangered New England Cottontails.
Our team helped to plant native shrubs to convert a field to early successional habitat -- just what these endangered cottontails need to survive!
This project coincided with National Wildlife Refuge Awareness Week which is designed to highlight the wealth of natural resources conserved on the nearly 100 million acres that comprise the National Wildlife Refuge System.
