Florida Forever Gets New Lease on Life

Thanks to our activists, we have something to celebrate!

In April 2008 the Florida state legislature unanimously approved a proposal to renew Florida Forever -- a landmark land conservation program -- for the next decade to help protect wildlife and wetlands in the Sunshine State from encroaching development. The bill will be signed within the next month by Governor Crist, who called for an extension of Florida Forever in his State of the State speech in March.

This is a huge victory for Florida’s panthers, gopher tortoises, black bears and other struggling wildlife that depend on the Florida Forever program to protect the habitat they need to survive.

After House leaders threatened to cut the budget for Florida Forever, Defenders mobilized thousands of our supporters to contact their state legislators and visit them in person at the state capitol to make sure the program got the funding it needed.

One of the best land-buying programs in the country, Florida Forever has enabled the state to purchase approximately 3 million acres of land – including vital habitat for many of Florida’s most vulnerable species -- that otherwise might have been bulldozed.

Thanks to the dedication and efforts of so many, the Florida Forever program will continue to protect Florida’s amazing wildlife and habitat.
