Livestock Producer Advisory Council

In 2004 Defenders established a Livestock Producer Advisory Council to provide guidance to Defenders on policies related to The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Wolf Compensation Trust and The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Grizzly Compensation Trust.

Currently, the Council is composed of five cattle and sheep growers who live and ranch in, or near, areas with wolves and some in areas with wolves and grizzly bears. See members and bios.

The Council has helped Defenders with achieving the primary goal of our compensation programs–to address economic impacts of predator recovery on livestock growers while at the same time promoting wolf and grizzly bear conservation by increasing public tolerance of imperiled species restoration projects.

The Council also helps with decisions regarding The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Proactive Carnivore Conservation Fund, a program established to prevent livestock losses to predators and enhance wildlife-sustainable livestock husbandry methods.

Ultimately, these programs reduce livestock losses and reduce lethal control of wolves and grizzly bears, thus promoting conservation of these species.

Defenders' partnership with the Council builds on our firm commitment to work with ranchers to prevent and resolve conflicts between predators and livestock.

The Council meets annually with our staff and has already assisted Defenders in refining guidelines for receiving compensation under The Bailey Wildlife Foundation Wolf and Grizzly Compensation Trusts and resolving complicated compensation cases. By volunteering their invaluable expertise the Council members support the conservation goals of these programs while addressing the concerns of livestock producers.
