Safe Neighborhoods - Wild Bears Community Project
Defenders is part of the Safe Neighborhoods - Wild Bears community project in Anchorage. In May 2008, as part of this project, Alaska Waste is delivering up to 500 bear-resistant tipper carts (bear-proof trash cans) to residents in two pilot neighborhoods at no extra cost.
The goal is to encourage the use of bear-resistant garbage containers – and coexistence with bears. The two neighborhoods were selected because of their proximity to bears, and because of the high number of bear-related calls there each summer.
