Wolverine Management and Policy

Heavy trapping in the early 1900s reduced populations of wolverines. Now habitat degradation caused by humans accessing the wolverine’s high alpine habitat with snowmobiles and skis is impacting the species.

Historically found from Maine to Washington down to the Rocky Mountains and Sierra/Cascades, wolverine now occur only in Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Washington and a handful may be found in the Great Lakes region. The wolverine is not consistently protected in all of these states, in fact Montana still allows wolverine to be trapped !

It is critical that the wolverine be protected under the Endangered Species Act in order to help its population rebound.
