Mercury Contamination in Fish
Numerous studies have shown that high levels of mercury are harmful to both humans and wildlife. Mercury is a toxin that can permanently damage the brain of developing fetuses and infants. Thus, pregnant woman, nursing mothers, woman of child-bearing age and young children are especially at risk for mercury-related health effects.
The most common way for people to be exposed to mercury is through consumption of fish. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, about 7 million women and children are eating mercury-contaminated fish at or above the level it considers safe. Forty states have issued advisories warning residents to restrict their consumption of certain fish.
