Tom Banks
Alaska Field Representative
Areas of Expertise: Ecology and management of Alaska wolves and grizzly bears, ecotourism
Tom takes the lead on the Alaska office’s initiatives to provide protection for terrestrial carnivores in Alaska. His efforts involve working with partner environmental groups, the ecotourism industry, the Board of Game, and public agencies. Our program emphasizes stopping aerial gunning and land-and-shoot predator control, protecting bear viewing areas from expanded hunting, eliminating bear baiting, and working with groups who support balanced wildlife management.
Before joining Defenders of Wildlife, Tom spent 25 summers as an interpretive naturalist, backcountry ranger, and law enforcement officer with state and federal agencies including Colorado Division of Parks, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Forest Service, and National Park Service.
Tom Banks holds a BS (cum laude) in Outdoor Recreation (Park and Recreation Administration) from Colorado State University and an MS in Environmental Science (Applied Ecology) from Western Washington University. He is a contributing author to the Climbers Guide to the Olympic Mountains (Mountaineer Books, 2006).
